Space and Heterodox Economy: an Interdisciplinary dialogue on the geographies of Capitalism

Three decades after the announcement of the end of geography and history by the neoliberal orthodoxy (Ohmae 1990; 1992), the successive processes of globalisation, neoliberalisation, financialisation, digitalisation, and climate change show the inherently spatial-temporal and unequal character of capitalism. In front of that, research on the articulation between space and economy and its intersectionality with social, cultural and environmental processes has flourished in the social sciences – often by and in dialogue with heterodox economists – shaping inter- and post-disciplinary approaches to understanding the geographical and social diversity of capitalism and its alternatives. Approaches that can configure, as geographer Jamie Peck (2023:20) points out, a heterodox discipline in a strong and positive sense, that is, one that “displays a theory-culture that reserves an important role for (ongoing) critique, and which is robustly polycentric and pluralist.”
Based on this heterodox conception, we are looking for academic articles that explore, review or question the articulation between economy and space with theoretical and/or empirical interventions from different conceptual positions (Marxism, Feminism, Postcolonialism, Keynesianism, Political Ecology, etc.), geographical (global north or south, or local, regional, national scale, etc.) and thematics such as, but not exclusively: class and social reproduction; digital capitalism; infrastructure; uneven development; touristification; housing; geographies of labour and capital; nature and economy; state and economy, etc.
If you are interested in participating in this semi-monographic issue, we ask you to follow the following steps:
- Make an expression of interest to the coordinators as soon as possible (see below).
- Ideally, we expect contributions of between 7,000 and 9,000 words (including references) in Spanish or English. The texts will be delivered through the Journal of Critical Economy platform until February 28, 2025.
- Instructions from the journal on submission and publication rules:https://www.upo.es/revistas/index.php/rec/about/submissions
